Laser Hair Removal

LifeSteps uses the latest technology in laser hair removal – the Cutera CoolGlide Laser. The CoolGlide's longer wavelength allows it to be used safely and effectively on patients with a variety of skin tones. The cooled handpiece increases patient comfort and minimizes the adverse skin reaction commonly seen with other lasers.

How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal works when there is color in the hair. The laser is attracted to the melanin in the hair follicle. Clients with light hair may see only moderate improvement and may need a greater number of treatment sessions. Dark hair responds best and white hair does not respond at all.

What does it feel like?
The laser feels like a mild sting for a fraction of a second. It has a built-in cooling tip that not only protects the skin but also helps to minimize the discomfort. Most patients have no discomfort after treatment and normal activities may be resumed.

How long do the treatments take?
An upper lip and chin can be done in 5 to 10 minutes. Underarms or bikini lines usually take 15 to 20 minutes. Legs and backs take longer. Very often, follow-up treatments are shorter (and less expensive) because there is less hair to treat.

How many treatments are necessary?
The number of treatments required for optimal results varies depending on the area treated, hair density, growth cycle, treatment parameters used, and a number of other factors. Typically 3 to 6 treatments, 4 to 8 weeks apart may be required to achieve the desired results.

What kind of results should you expect?
There is often no immediate change. Your skin may get slightly red or even develop a small crust that will peel. The laser may leave small marks on your skin. The marks will clear up in a few hours to a few days. The hair that has been destroyed will continue to fall out for 2 to 3 weeks. Many times it will get darker and thicker just before it falls out. You may not see an obvious change immediately after your first treatment.

Is it permanent?
Treatment results vary among clients. For some, this may mean a significant decrease in the frequency with which you must shave. For others, it may mean permanent cosmetic improvement because hair re-growth is minimal, very fine or completely absent. Most patients will permanently lose 15 to 20% of hair with each treatment. Everyone will have some re-growth with time regardless of the technology used. The laser is 60 to 90% effective in permanent hair reduction. Hair that grows back will tend to be much finer and less concentrated.
